Y-cables are used to "split" signal or power into two paths. 

One example is to split a radar signal that connects to the tractor dash so it will continue to supply signal to the dash and also make the speed signal available to a planter or spray monitor.

A second example would be to split the 3 pin accessory plug on newer tractors into 2 plugs.
